105-year-old Rambai of India completed 100 meters in 45.40 seconds

Usually, we see that it becomes difficult for the older generation to walk properly, dance, and run. But, there are such old people in the world, age is just a number to them and they become an inspiration to others. Rambai is a perfect example of that kind of old person who thinks age is just a number. Rambai completed 105 years and she is currently 106 running, set a new record by completing the 100 meters race in 45.40 seconds.

Rambai of Charkhi, Dadri, Haryana, India was the oldest single participant in the National Open Masters Athletics Championships organized by the Athletics Federation of India in Vadodara, Gujarat. As there were no other athletes above the age of 85, Rambai participated alone.

She participated in the 100 meters and 200 meters races and completed the 100-meter race in 45.40 seconds that was held on 15th June 2022 (Wednesday). The 200-meter race held on 19th June 2022 (Sunday) was completed in 1 minute 52.17 seconds and she won two gold medals.

Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Textiles, Minister of Commerce and Industry,  Government of India twitted, “This is incredible! 105 years old Super Grandma sprints a new 100m record at National Open Masters Athletics Championship. #Rambai ran alone as there was no competitor above 85.”

According to a report, Rambai has set a new record by breaking the previous record of 101-year-old Man Kaur by completing the 100-meter race in 45.40 seconds. Man Kaur won the gold medal in the World Masters meet by completing the 100-meter race in 74 seconds. Now, her target is to participate in international tournaments and she is planning to apply for a passport.

Talking about her victory, Rambai said, “I consume churma, curd, and milk.” At the same time, when her granddaughter Sharmila Sangwan was asked about Ramabai’s diet, she said, “Rambai is a pure vegetarian and drinks 500 ml pure milk twice a day including about 250 grams of ghee and 500 grams of curd daily. In addition, Sharmila said, my grandmother used to do a lot of work on the farm. She runs three-four kilometers every day.”

Rambai was born on January 1, 1917. She made her first race debut in Varanasi in November 2021. Since then, she won many medals by participating in several race events in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Sharmila, her granddaughter told that her grandmother used to run only in the fields and then she used to run wearing a “salwar-kameez” and normal shoes, but now she has started wearing running shoes and tracksuits.

Not only Rambai, but all the family members are sportsmen. Some of them bagged medals in different sports. Santra Devi, Rambai’s 62-year-old daughter won gold in the relay race, while both her sons Mukhtar Singh and Vadhu Bhateri won bronze medals in the 200 meters race. Rambai has now become an inspiration to other old-age people.
