Before commencement of the writeup about the Internationally reputed Film and stage Actor since 1959, I like to state that his career started in AIR (All India Radio). Soumitra Chatterjee was born on 19th January,1935, at Krishna Nagar and died on 15th November, 2020 at Belle Vue Clinic, Kolkata.
He dedicated himself in the world of acting, teaching, directing and editing the journal “Ekkhan” with his friend, Nirmalya. When hid career in film commenced, the leading Mahanayak Uttam Kumar was doing his 70th film in 1959. He also acted with Uttam Kumar in many films like ‘Jhinder Bandi’, ‘Nayak’ etc.
His first film was ‘Apur Sansar’ with actress Sharmila Tagore in 1959, directed by Manikda, or Satyajit Ray. Soumitra Chatterjee was not allowed to act in ‘Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen’ as he knew that Soumitra Chatterjee will rise higher.
Soumitra Chatterjee was acquinted with Sishir Kumar Bhaduri while he was in University. Sishir Kumar Bhaduri expired in 1959. After seeing the movie of ‘Jalsaghar’, he used to learn acting boldly from Chhabi Biswas. Right choice by the jahuri, Satyajit Ray to find out the jawahar, Soumitra Chatterjee. ‘Tin Bhubaner Pare with Tanuja Samarth, and Aparajita as apu, ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’, ‘Khudita Pashan’, ‘Avigyan’, ‘Basanta Bilap’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Ganasatru’, ‘Ganadebata’, ‘Koni’, ‘Sonar Kella’, ‘Paras Pathar’ etc are some of his important films.
Soumitra, after completion of school education, was admitted in City College in I.Sc and then completed BA(Hons) In Bengali. Postgraduate MA in Bengali was done by him from the University of Calcutta.

He refused twice Padma Shri award before 2000.
He edited Bengali magazine, ‘Ekkhan’ with his friend, Nirmalya babu. After Nirmalya’s demise, he continued to edit the same till death. ‘Kabita Samagra’ is a wonderful collection of many poems.
He completed 14 films of Satyajit Ray, and acted in Ajoy Kar, Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha, Inder Sen directorship. His following films are superb: ‘Bela Sheshe’, ‘Debi’, ‘Sakha Prasakha’, ‘Sonar Kella’, ‘Joi Baba Felunath’, ‘Hirak Rajar Deshe’, ‘Nayak’ etc.
Even although tired doing multifarious jobs, he had to act at Sarat Sadan in Biru Datta’s ‘Mukhomukhi’ consequtively for 5 days in a week as he had to listen to his daughter’s recommendation.
From the core of organisational set up for Tollygunge studio, he tried to organise well for West Bengal Artist Federation. Avinetri Sangha was abolished. He deserves newcomers should be having academic training in film institutes like Pune.
At the eleventh hour of his life, he completed his biopic. He had a prolonged exposure to have rebirth in this world, specially in Bengal where most of the time was spared.
Soumitra Chatterjee has done nearly 300 films. After the demise of Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, this 2nd Mahanayak left the world after 40 years. He had a very good relation with Uttam Kumar.
“Kirti Jasya Sa Jivate” – means he will survive among the mass for his dedication.

During Mars major, Saturn minor and Mercury interim dasa period, which was running, the dedicated Film Mahanayak breathed last on 15th November, 2020. The day was Sunday ruled by sun, constellation was Visakha in Libra Sign, the eighth from Pisces Ascendant (Lagna) and 5-6th house from Punarvasu Nakshatra of Gemini or Mithun Moonsign (Rashi).
Saturn, the 12th &11th lord from Pisces Ascendant located at present in Capricorn but from natal Moon Sign, Gemini, Saturn is in 8th house and from Lagna Eighth lord is Venus is also passing Libra to Scorpio along with Mercury while Mars from Pisces to Aries.
